The Knox Class Frigates were originally designed as twin screw destroyers. Then due to then Secretary of the Navy William McNamara's decision to save money, they did away with one engine room and shorten the length of the ship, it was reclassified as a Destroyer Escort. Before 6 of the ships had been commissioned they were again reclassified as Frigates. Used mainly in an anti submarine roll, the Knox class frigates were still capable of doing 25 knots plus. Armed with a 5" 54 caliber canon forward, along with an Asroc launcher. Aft she was originally fitted with sea sparrow missiles, and later converted to CIWS. A sabboted 20 mm cannon capable of independent defense of the ship. Torpedoes (which were later removed) rounded out the armament.
